What is the prescribed dosage for doxycycline?
The usual dose of Doxycycline for adults is 100mg twice a day followed by maintenance doses. Doxycycline should not be administered in children below 8 years. For children over 8 years the usual dose of Doxycycline is 4.4mg/kg body weight equally divided into two doses for the first two days followed by maintenance doses.
- Uncomplicated urethral infection, rectal infections in adults – 100mg twice daily (at an interval of 12 hour) X 7 days.
- Non-gonococcal Urethritis- 100mg twice daily (at an interval of 12 hour).
- Syphilis – (Patients allergic to penicillin) Doxycycline 100mg twice-daily (at an interval of 12 hour) X14 days.
- For Prophylaxis of Malaria in adults – 100mg daily during the period of traveling in the malarious area and should be continued for 4 weeks even after leaving the malarious area (in children 2mg/kg body weight).
- Anthrux – 100mg twice daily for two months.
How to best store doxycyclin?
Store Doxycycline in a cool and dry place (15°c-25°c), in a tight light resistant container. Keep it away from reach of children and pets.
Side Effects
Followings are the less serious common side effects of Doxycycline: -
- Mild nausea, Vomiting, Stomach upset, Diarrhea
- Sores in the rectal or genital area

Drug Interaction
- Anti coagulant drugs in combination with Doxycycline causes excessive thinning of blood.
- Doxycycline is a bacteriostatic drug and may interfere the bactericidal effect of penicillin and so penicillin should not be used in conjunction of Doxycycline.
- Antacids containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium and iron containing medication can impair the absorption of Doxycycline or tetracyclines in general.
- Doxycycline may render oral contraceptive less effective.
