What is the preferred dosage for Tetracycline?
- For moderate to moderately severe infections in adults - 500mg twice daily or 250mg thrice daily may be applied. 500mg trice daily may be required in case of severe infections.
- For moderate to moderately severe infections in children above 8 years of age – (25mg-50mg) per Kg body weight divided in four equal doses.
- For treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea – 500mg 4times daily (every 6 hour) for 7 days.
- For uncomplicated urethral and endocervical or rectal infections in adult – 500mg 4times daily for 7 days.
- For treatment of syphilis – 4000mg of tetracycline in equally divided doses for a period of 10-12 days.
- For severe acne – 250mg 4times daily for first seven days and thereafter 125mg to 500mg daily until the remission of the lesions.
Usual dose for adult in moderate infections is 1gm-2gm/day 2 or 4 equally divided doses and for children above 8 years 25mg to 50mg/Kg body weight/day 2 or 4 equally divided doses. For severe infections doses may be increased. Tetracycline should not be administered in children below 8 years. Doses should be taken 2 hour before or after meal as food reduces the absorption of the drug.

What are the side effects of Tetracycline?
Less serious commonly known side effects of tetracycline drug include:
