Supta Padasana: yoga exercise for improving digestion and abdominal muscles

- Lie flat on the floor with legs together and arms behind the head, palm facing upwards.
- Keep your head straight, with chin tucked in.
- Inhale.
- Raise both legs up to 90 degrees, or, as far as you feel comfortable, while inhaling the breath...without exhaling.
- Hold the pose for two breaths (still do not exhale). During this pose, try not to arch the lower back, but pull the abdominal muscles inwards.
- Exhale. Bring both legs down.
- Continue for 10 rounds. If your lower back is weak, do it against a wall.
This asana (yoga exercise) flexes your abdominal muscles, strengthening them. It puts some pressure on you stomach and helps in correcting the disorders relating to pancreas. This also improves the digestion system of your body. This asana also puts a pressure on your hip joints, thigh muscles, waist and spinal cord. Do not perform this exercise, if you have problem of spinal cord, or if you have had some kind of abdominal surgery and still undergoing treatment. In case your muscles are getting overstretched because of this asana, please lie flat on the floor for 2 minutes and stop the exercise immediately.
