BMI: Body Mass Index

BMI is the popular measurement used in identifying obesity level. In simple terms it is the weight of a person in relation to his height. The mathematical calculation of BMI is done by multipling weight of a person in pounds and then dividing that value by the square of his height in inches.

Doctors have created a benchmark to identify the obesity level. If BMI is greater than 25, the person is treated as overweight. But, if the BMI goes beyond 30...the person is treated as obese.

A detailed obesity table based on Weight and Height (BMI) is provided below as an image.

BMI is a popular & common measure, though it does not calculate the fats in body. As a result, the BMI may become mis-leading - especially in the case of mascular people where muscles tend of increase the body weight - rather than body fats.

How to reduce BMI / Weight?
Simple things help in loosing weight -
1) Disciplined organic healthy diet.
2) Work out, exercises, Gymnasium, physical activity, jogging
3) Prescribed Weight Loss Medications like Xenical (Orlistat), Meridia, Reductil.

Child Obesity and overweight-ism

What defines obesity?
Generally, the obesity and over-weight terms are used interchangeably. We need to realize that they are not same. The difference lies in consideration.

Overweight is : when the child is 10% more than the ideal body weight.

Obesity is : when the child's weight is 30 pounds more than the ideal body weight.

Studies on over-weight-ism
The studies conducted in USA reveal that 15% of the children are overweight; and that if this %'ages increase at this rate - then the country will have 1/3rd overweight children very soon. The studies further say that - once these children become adults : the country could have 50 million diabetic citizen by 2050 !! ::gulp::

More recent studies conducted in USA reveal that probability of asthama appearing in overweight / obese children is 1.5 - 2 times higher than normal children.

Wow wow wow..... now thats an alarming bell for all parents!!

The obesity / overweight causes a lot of health risks for the people -most fatal being heart attacks from hypertension (high blood pressure) and high cholestrol levels. Other risks include - kidney failure, amputations etc.

Thus it is paramount important to curb the obesity now and here - not just in the states but other countries as well - since i believe that even though numbers may not be alarming in other countries....they will be either in similar range; or increase at a greater pace.

What causes over-weight / obesity?
Obesity can be caused by a number of factors. Most important factor is the habits / behavior. This is a controlable factor - in hands of parents / children. Other factors include human genes, for which medical support and early treatment is the best control mechanism.

Habits / Behavior and Obesity
The major factors involving habit are:-

1) Eating Behavior - junk food vs. healthy food.
2) Comfort travel, and no walks
3) Little or no exercise
4) Too much TV / sitting work and very little of sports
5) Imbalanced exercises also causes some unhealthy body.
